Applications for John Monash Scholarships Go Online

Nearly 300 Applications were received for the 2015 John Monash Scholarships, and the Foundation is now preparing for the National Interviews for its prestigious postgraduate awards. The Scholarships selection process has undergone major changes this year, to improve its ability to handle the high demand while maintaining the individual attention to each application.

scholarshipapplications_oct15Applications for the 2015 John Monash Scholarships closed in August 2014. 296 Applications were received, which demonstrates the very high level of interest Australian graduates are showing in overseas postgraduate opportunities.

For the first time the Application process was conducted online. The General Sir John Monash Foundation applications were hosted by the Australian Scholarship Foundation. All Applications were submitted via ASF’s web-based portal, grouped by discipline, and then assessed by teams of expert reviewers.

94 candidates were interviewed by the State panels, who met throughout September and October, with successful candidates progressing to the National Interviews, held in Melbourne at the end of October.  The 2015 Scholars will be announced at the Sydney Opera House on 26th November.

Managing the 2015 Application process is Dr Judith Landsberg, who joined the Foundation team as Scholarships Coordinator in July. Judith has a Bachelor of Science from the ANU with First Class Honours, and a DPhil in Nuclear Physics from Oxford University.  She worked with McKinsey & Company in New York, and then taught in Bermuda. For the last few years she has been President of Greenrock, a sustainability consulting entity in Bermuda, and is currently undertaking a Masters of Environmental Leadership from Duke University.  She has recently returned to Australia.

Judith supports the application and selection process, and provides support to the Scholars. In her short time with the Foundation she has already contributed to make the process more efficient and effective.

Each year John Monash Scholarships are awarded to outstanding graduates from Australian universities, who have demonstrated leadership skills, and a vision to contribute to Australia. The Scholarship enables them to undertake Masters or Doctoral degrees at the world’s best universities, to support that vision. A minimum of 10 postgraduate Scholarships are available, each valued at AUD $60,000 per year for a maximum of three years (up to AUD $180,000). Major sponsors include Woodside, Origin Foundation, CBA, BHP Billiton, Wesfarmers, leading Australian universities, and other government and philanthropic organisations.
